Living in Browns Valley: West Napa's Easygoing Side

Former orchard country, now a west Napa neighborhood of hillside homes, oak trails, and a local market.

Fall is a good season to get to know west Napa. Browns Valley sits on the city's western side, where, according to the City of Napa, many homes look out on rolling hills, pastureland, and vineyards. Here is a look at where it is, how it grew, and what everyday life looks like there.

Where It Is and How It Grew

The City of Napa divides Browns Valley into four official neighborhoods: Central, East, South, and West. Together they run from Highway 29 and Napa Creek west to the city limit, and Browns Valley Road forms a boundary of all four. This guide uses those City boundaries.

According to the City, the area was originally part of a large valley of farms with mainly orchards and prunes. Browns Valley Road was one of the first improved roads in western Napa in 1911, and the City notes that the improvement was paid for by the neighbors the road served.

Parks, Trails, and Everyday Life

Westwood Hills Park at 3107 Browns Valley Road is a City park that Visit Napa Valley describes as heavily wooded with expansive views, with about three miles of trails through oak groves and grassy meadows. At the same address, the Carolyn Parr Nature Center, run by the nonprofit Napa Valley Naturalists, has exhibits on local habitats, raptors, and geology, plus a native plant garden. Admission to the center is free, and it is open Wednesdays from 10 AM to 4 PM and weekends from 1 to 4 PM. For another walk close to home, Timberhill Park on Timberhill Lane has a hiking trail. Both parks are open sunrise to sunset.

For daily errands, Browns Valley Market is a locally owned grocery store at 3263 Browns Valley Road. Browns Valley Elementary, a Napa Valley Unified public school at 1001 Buhman Avenue, opened in 1960 and serves kindergarten through eighth grade, according to the California Department of Education.

The Homes

Homes vary throughout Browns Valley. In Browns Valley West, the City describes homes nestled primarily in the hills, in both newer and older developments, with many enjoying sweeping views of the valley. To the south, many residents look out on rolling hills, pastureland, and vineyards.
