Free Chipping Service for Napa County Homeowners
Everything you need to know before you schedule
The Napa County Fire Department offers a free vegetation chipping service to qualifying homeowners in unincorporated Napa County, running April through October each year. It is one of the most practical tools available to help you maintain your 100-foot defensible space and reduce wildfire risk around your property.

Pile Requirements at a Glance
Prepare your piles correctly so the crew can get started right away
What the crew will chip
- Brush and tree limbs from your property only
- Stems up to 6 inches in diameter
- Piles within 5 feet of a road or driveway
- Hand-stacked piles, max 6 ft high
- Cut ends facing toward the road
- Piles free of roots, stumps, rocks, and dirt
What will be turned away
- Broom, poison oak, blackberries, or thorned vines
- Leaves, pine needles, or grass clippings
- Mechanically piled brush (tractor or dozer)
- Construction materials or foreign objects
- Root balls, stumps, or dirt
- Heavy material stacked on top of small material
